My kids are still very happily using a couple of my old Intel laptops. They're perfectly fine for all the things that they need to do. However, for most people, even a move to the M1 Macbook Air would be a big upgrade. I'm using one of those now and have been for close to three years and there's just no comparison.
It's not even about the obvious speed bump. Real-life all day battery life is real. That's just huge and completely levels up the practicality of a laptop.
I'm slightly miffed that OS upgrades have ended for my 2015 base spec iMac, which is still an absolutely rock solid bit of kit. I now just have to let Apple chip away at me by showing me all the things that my perfectly serviceable machine can no longer do. The new iMac is tempting to replace that one and I'd fully expect to get a decade of use out of it. When you do the numbers on that - they're incredibly good value machines, despite the high initial price tag.
